Education of library specialists in the classical university: ten years' experience of TSU

Library education at classical university can be considered as the option enriching the practice of librarian's preparation which developed in our country. Training at university is based on the principles of scientific depth and universalism so important for modern information and library activities. Since 2002 librarian education starts at Tomsk State University, and in 2004 the chair of Library and Information Science (LIS) study opens here. The university, with its richest Scientific Library, has the unique educational and scientific environment for librarians training. In 10 years of the development the chair passed a considerable way of formation; in recent years introduction of the State Educational Standard of the 3rd generation and transition to multilevel education were the defining processes. The staff of the chair teaches about forty disciplines, develops electronic courses in Moodle system. In the curriculum there are such subjects as Latin, Antique literature. The course «Librarianship of Great Britain» for students of chair is given in English by her head. Practices Students pass their Practices in the TSU Scientific Library, A.S. Pushkin Regional Library and in other libraries of the city. The important area of chair's work is research activity. Since 2011 the chair wins RGNF grants. On the themes of chair's projects «Libraries in Space of Culture of the Tomsk Region (XIX - the beginning of the XXI centuries)» (2011-2012) and «Rural libraries of the Tomsk region in the conditions of modernization of modern Russian society: activity and prospects» (2013-2014) 70 articles are published, a collective monograph is prepared, a number of scientific conferences is carried out. The chair purposefully helps students to be trained in skills of research work, involving them on cathedral projects. In a decade the chair has 169 student's publications. The chair has graduated 47 specialists; in 2015 the first graduation of bachelors will take place. Graduates of chair work generally in the sphere of library and information activities; the geography of their employment is very extensive - from Vladivostok to Moscow. Nearly a half of graduates successfully work in Tomsk Regional A.S. Pushkin Library, in municipal and university libraries of Tomsk. There are every reason to believe that education of library specialists at classical university can and has to promote increase of level and prestige of library profession.
