Trends and prospects for the development of intellectual property in biotechnology and food technologies: An analysis of university technology transfers

The article analyzes the development trends of intellectual property in the fields of biotechnology, including food technology, and bioeconomics at the university level. The commercialization of university intellectual property, patent activity, its dynamics, and the structure of intellectual property (IP) objects are among the most critical indicators of the effectiveness of scientific research and the innovative potential of universities. Researchers observe a significant increase in patent activity by large industrial enterprises, including those in the Far East, and a growth in the implementation of intellectual achievements in the food biotechnology and technology industry. This trend is further supported by the launch of the national project "Bioeconomics and Food Security" within the state strategy for scientific and technological development. Consequently, the authors suggest that preconditions exist for increasing the share of intellectual property in the aforementioned fields, as well as the number of technology transfer projects from universities to businesses and among higher schools. To analyze the university's IP objects, particularly inventions in biotechnology, and to compare them with nationwide IP trends, the author obtained data from open sources on registered IP objects of the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) as a key university in the Eurasian region. The data cover a full five-year period from 2020 to 2024 across all IP objects, different schools within the university, and specifically IP in biotechnology, food technology, and bioeconomics. The following conclusions were formulated: despite a minor decline over the five-year period in the dynamics of new IP registrations, the core of FEFU's patents consists of intellectual property objects in food technology and biotechnology. Furthermore, the number of certificates for software and databases in the field of bioeconomics is growing. It is concluded that a trend comparable to the national one indeed exists towards an increasing number of IP objects in biotechnology and bioeconomics at the university. For instance, food sciences lead in the total share of patents registered at FEFU. This is likely connected both with an established culture of emphasizing patenting and with the development of food technologies and biotechnology within the university and the country as a whole. The author declares no conflicts of interests.
