Understanding Interactivity: Artistic Reflections on Cybernetics

Author considers art as cultural reflection of science and focuses on early cybernetic art as an aesthetic reflection on cybernetics. Artistic ideas of interactivity are is primary research focus. Aesthetic concepts of interactivity are identified on the basis of early cybernetic art works: emergent creativity (conversational concept), responsive reactivity (reactive concept) and reflexivity (critical concept). Limits of the main-stream digital computer culture and its mythology of interactivity as digital are discussed. Long before the turn to aesthetics of emergence and artificial life in 1990s, pioneers of cybernetic art created fundamental vision of interactivity that leads to life-like artificial behaviour, but still remains far from its full implementation.
