IN WHICH SENSE MUST INFORMATION BE TRUE?
Correspondence theory point of view when we fix that it is raining in objective reality. From the point of view of coherence theory a statement is true when it is in accord with other statements in some system of knowledge. For example, a theorem of some axiomatic system in mathematics will be true from the coherence theory point of view when it is proven by axioms of the system and it does not contradict other theorems of the system. In this case, a true statement is not required to correspond to a fact of objective reality. Thus the question about truth of information may presuppose different senses of truth. This means that one theory of information may suppose that information must be true in one sense of truth and that information must not be truth in another sense of truth. The author draws attention to the fact that some modern research in the area of philosophy of information assert that information must be true, but they do not make clear in which sense of the word “truth” information must be true, creating difficulties for understanding the theories. In particular, the philosophical theory of information presented by L. Floridi in recent years allows two different interpretations of the concept of truth. Floridi asserts that information must be true, but the sense of the word “truth” is not clear. That is why Floridi’s thesis is also not understandable. We do not have a possibility to decidewhether Floridi is right because the content of the thesis is ambiguous. These circumstances show the relevance of terminological and conceptual investigations that are presented in the article. To answer the question whether information must be true or not, it is necessary to make clear the content of the concept of truth and the sense of the word “truth” accordingly.
