The concept of home in the stories by Ernest Hemingway and Yuri Kazakov: Problem formulation
The article is devoted to the literary links between Ernest Hemingway and Yuri Kaza-kov, a Russian short story writer. Though the authors never met each other in person, Ka-zakov himself admits Hemingway's ethical and ideological influence, and so do his close friends and those who investigate his creativity (Viktor Konetskiy, Gleb Goryshin, Igor Kuzmichev and Elena Galimova). In addition, Galimova points out the stylistic and thematic connection between the oeuvre of the two authors. However, as little has been done to study the literary links between Hemingway and Kazakov so far, it still remains the question to be answered. In this research, the literary interaction between Hemingway and Kazakov is studied with the use of concept analysis. The author analyses literary concepts, their structure and functioning in the usus and literary text. A literary concept is "such an images, symbol or motif that is connected to geopolitical, historic and ethnopsychological points beyond a literary piece of art" (V. Zusman). In this paper, Hemingway's "A Clean Well-Lighted Place" and Kazakov's "The Accursed North" are analysed for the concept of home, with its key words "dom" in Russian and "home" and "house" in English. The complex analysis consists of several stages. At first, the author investigates the structure of the literary concept with the use of various dictionaries to find out that all the keywords representing the concept are polysemantic, with the most important meanings of "a place where a person lives or a place a person thinks of as native", "a place where a person was born, Motherland", "family, houselold", "a building." Secondly, the author analyses the representations of the keywords in both texts. The further comparative analysis has shown the connection between the stories at the level of images realizing the concept under study. It has been demonstrated that Ernest Hemingway and Yuri Kazakov share some common ways of depicting and understanding the concept of home, with homelessness being usual for their characters. Furthermore, both writers consider this state positive rather than negative, as the idea of traveling and wandering is very close to Hemingway, Kazakov, and their characters. The first edition of Kazakov's story shows some stylistic similarities with that of Hemingway, though explicit intertextual connections have not been found.
