Gladiator. The image of a gladiator in Russian lyrics of the 19th century, or the energy of delusion
The paper studies the Russian reception of the image epitomized in the ancient statue of The Dying Galatian, better known as The Dying Gladiator. The symbol of the Greek-Roman victory over the barbarian tribes came into the 19th-century Russian literature through the mediation of Ch. Chenedolle and G. Byron to become the tragic image of a victim of a declining empire. The continuous reception can be traced from M. Lermontov to V. Mayakovsky, who employed this image to epitomize the energy of national myth-making. The image of the gladiator first appears in Russian poetry in the 1830s (A. Polezhaev, M. Lermontov), gradually reaching the apogee of its popularity between the 1850s and 1860s (I. Myatlev, K. Pavlova, A. Fet, N. Berg, N. Scherbina, K. Sluchevsky), primarily due to its ability to absorb and express the ideological meanings and function as a symbol of the oppressed Slavs, with their enormous potential not only for their own future, but also for the future of humanity. In the 1870s and later (N. Simborsky, S. Nadson, A. Barykova, Konstantin Romanov, A. Maikov, D. Merezhkovsky), the image of the gladiator was losing its popularity to give way to that of the Christian martyr, equally capable of epitomizing inhumanity of Imperial Rome during its fall. Nevertheless, the image of the gladiator, domesticated by Russian poetry to be perceived as nationally affinitive, remains in the arsenal of its poetic tropes for a long time, acquiring the function of a striking and highly effective metaphor. This image becomes the subject of reflection as a peculiar cultural icon in the essay prose as well (V. Rozanov). Thus, the fate of the gladiator's image in Russian poetry of the 19th century is rooted in a double misconception: first, the false interpretation of The Dying Galatian as a gladiator and, second, the idea that the Dacians were Slavs. The Gladiator-Dacian has incorporated the image of a defeated Slav, noble and courageous, though despicable by the Romans and left to die in the circus ring.
