The review examines the latest published work of Alexander Vladimirovich Golubev, a cultural historian and leading researcher at the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, - the monograph "The Genuine Face of the Abroad": The Image of the Outside World in Soviet Political Cartoons, 1922-1941 on Soviet foreign policy cartoons from the Interbellum period. The book under review represents one of the most significant works in domestic research on so-called "visual history" and continues to serve as a key reference for many specialists studying Soviet culture. In his monograph, Golubev conceptualizes the primary imagological phenomena in Soviet propaganda of the 1920s-1940s - ranging from the representations of capitalists and fascists to the use of animalistic imagery for creating original foreign policy cartoons. By drawing on an extensive base of archival sources, the author was able to identify the principal Soviet cartoonists who specialized in commenting on international political events. The review highlights the main methodological issues of the monograph, particularly within the context of the extensive "visual turn" in the humanities in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. In addition to examining its methodological specificities, the review assesses the significance of Golubev's work for future studies of Soviet visual culture.
