Application of the finite element grouping procedure to improve the efficiency of unsteady multiphase flow simulation in high-heterogeneous 3D porous media

The problem of numerical modeling of three-dimensional multiphase unsteady flows in porous media is considered in relation to the problems of hydrocarbon production. An approach with implicit pressure calculation and explicit phase transfer and recalculation of saturations on finite elements is proposed. To improve efficiency, the finite elements are divided into groups, in which their state is recalculated with an acceptable and closest to the required time step.
