TV ESports Journalism: From the Origin Until Today

The article discusses the history of eSports and eSports journalism. The presented theoretical and methodological basis testifies to the relevance of the research topic and its novelty. Having formulated the purpose of the study as an acquaintance with the history of the formation and development of cyber journalism, the authors consistently implement it. The article consists of paragraphs logically related to each other. In the introduction, the aim of the research is formulated, the theoretical and methodological basis and research methods are described. In the section "ESports and ESports Journalism", the authors introduce a working definition of the term. It is noted that there are several concepts that are synonymous with this: gaming, computer sports, virtual sports or electronic sports. The history of the development and recognition of eSports as an independent sports direction is also considered. Then the authors deals with the reaction of the journalistic community to the new cultural phenomenon. As a result of the improvement of information technologies, eSports has become widespread, which could not go unnoticed in the media. Following the print editions (Life and Time newspapers) about electronic sports, TV programs began to appear. As examples, the authors consider the TV channels of the USA, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Russia. In the section "ESports Journalism on Russian TV", the main emphasis is placed on the formation and development of television eSports journalism in Russia. It has been noticed that for several years now various separate programs devoted to events in the world of eSports have been broadcast on Russian television. However, the only cable themed eSports channel is E TV, launched in 2015. The launch of a new international ESports channel GINX Esports TV is scheduled for 2019 in Russia. For the first time on Russian television, eSports appeared on the NTV channel in the Namedni [Recently] program in 2002 - in the storyline that lasted for ten minutes, and was about members of the M19 team on Counter-Strike. Again, eSports appeared on NTV in the spring of 2016 in the program Itogi dnya: kibersport [Results of the Day: ESports]. The authors note that on Russian television stable genres and formats of television programs for eSports coverage have not yet been developed, currently a lot of television experiments are underway. In the conclusion of the article, the authors note that Russian television eSports journalism is at the very beginning of its journey and determine the prospects for its development.
