Developing intellectual competence of future biotechnologists in the process of learning a foreign language
The article discusses the methodology for the development of intellectual competence of biotechnology students in the process of learning a foreign language, and organizational and methodological learning environment that provide a comprehensive, holistic development of intellectual skills in the context of a competence-based approach to modern professional-oriented education of technical university students enrolled in the field of biotechnology. The starting point of the authors' reasoning was the analysis of the concept of intellectual competence, the components and levels of competence development, considered from linguistic and methodological points of view. As a result of the research, the role of development of cognitive processes (knowledge, understanding, application, analysis, evaluation, synthesis) in a hierarchical sequence (according to B. Bloom's taxonomy) from simple to complex as target components of educational activities in the development of the future biotechnologist's intellectual competence in the process of learning a foreign language has been revealed. The components of the described methodology for the development of intellectual competence are discussed: the aim and objectives; the syllabus which is selected and structured according to the proposed principles; assessment tools and criteria. Much attention is paid to the teaching manual "First Steps in Biotechnology" designed and implemented in the educational process, which reflects the situations of professional communication of biotechnologists and presents the system of tasks consisting of innovative techniques and strategies, the use of which will allow the teacher to develop intellectual skills in students not only in learning but also in everyday and professional life (the ability to make well-considered decisions, work with information, analyze, compare, solve problems, achieve the result, etc.). The results of experimental work are described, subjected to mathematical processing and analysis, proving the effectiveness of the methodology developed and introduced into the educational process for the development of the intellectual competence of future biotechnologists. The presence and degree of positive changes in the subjective and objective indicators of the level of development of the studied competence in the experimental groups of biotechnology students were recorded.
