From the History of Didactic Poetry: "Fables for Female Sex" by E. Moore in Russia

Аbstract. Russian version of "Fables for Female Sex" by English poet and dramatist E. Moore (1712-1757) is studied in the article. First published in Russia in 1788, the Fables accompanied 'An Unfortunate Mother's Advice to Her Absent Daughters' by Sarah Pennington. N. Yatsenkov translated English verse fables in prose, which was not uncommon for the late 18 century. The target of Yatsenkov's was to render chiefly the matter subject of E. Moore's moralizing. As conventional didactic means of English 18 century, the 'Fables for Ladies' transformed classical fable stories for women-readers' use and showed the most rational ways to their life satisfaction and prosperity. E. Moore's poems took up new for Russian didactic poetry niche of women-targeting fables which were aimed to help newcomer girls to fit the challenging society.
