Interjections pertaining to sounds of water in Finnish and Russian
The object of the research were onomatopoeic words imitating the sounds of water in Russian and Finnish. In an elicitation test, the subjects (22 native speakers of Russian and 18 of Finnish) were asked to fill in a questionaire based on video clips that included different sounds of water in typically occurring situations. The participants were asked to describe the sound by a word and a sentence. The starting hypothesis that there would be many similar answers turned out to be wrong. Even though some similar tendencies were spotted, the answers given by Russian-speakers and Finnish-speakers showed significant differences. Moreover, native speakers of the same language often provided different answers describing the same sound. For Finnish-speakers, the different answers were often similar phonetically, while Russian-speakers used non-related onomatopoeia and occasionalisms. The predicational function previously described as central to Russian onomatopoeic interjections did not prove to be so in this case.
