Developing critical thinking skills in the professional education of higher school students
The article considers the issue of critical thinking skills development in ESL (English as a Second / Foreign Language) classrooms as an essential factor for enhancing the students’ creative potential and, thus, shaping the environment for effective learning and further application in the students’ professional lives. The authors analyse the definitions of the terms “thinking” and “critical thinking” provided by well-known foreign and Russian psychologists and methodologists. The necessity of efficient implementation of these acquired skills in the modern information space is underlined, i.e. to process the data thoroughly and consciously, to find and select ideas in the media stream and to be capable of analyzing and assessing them. The conducted research of available scientific materials concludes that the aforementioned skill enables students to find their role in their present day lives and to adapt to ever-changing conditions. Some methods of enhancing critical thinking skills are described and illustrated by examples: by professional terminology use, visual representation of the reading materials (specialized texts) -completing graphic organizers, graphic text organization.
