Historiographical review of psychometrics and its application in the English language teaching
A number of scientists consider foreign language competence advancement theoretically from the point of view of pedagogy, linguistics, sociology and cognitive science carrying out various educational activities in an innovative way, in particular, using technical equipment in order to modernize and improve the educational system. They also apply elearning using pedagogical measurements and remote educational technologies and develop experimental models for teaching students foreign languages in various professional fields. The sense laid down in the legal regulations concerning educational process reorganization, is directed to involve elements of the individual educational program in the learning process and change scientific paradigms. All these innovative educational technologies would not be possible without an objective measurement tool that standardizes all individual student processes and gives the most accurate of all possible assessments of their knowledge, skills and abilities. Psychometrics can represent such tool. The article highlights the essence of this science, provides an overview of its development and application, examines the criteria for “reliability” and “validity” of standardized tests, and determines the borders of accuracy and reliability of results during testing. Speaking about the formation of the foreign language competence of students, it should be noted that it is becoming one of the basic ones, since the development of the youth of one country with scientific potential can not be isolated: it strives to integrate into the global scientific community to share experience and follow innovative world trends. The research hypothesis is based on the assumption that the process of foreign language teaching in the higher education system will improve qualitatively if the foreign competence is formed taking into account the psychometric characteristics of students, such as measuring the knowledge, abilities, attitudes and qualities of the student as a person.
