The global language: from the experience of using natural languages in overcoming interlingual and intercultural barriers

The processes of creating prerequisites for transforming the English language into theglobal language of universal communication are considered. The experience of using naturallanguages as languages of international exchange in the the historical epochs preceding theemergence of capitalist relations and the industrial revolution is presented. The processes thathave eventually led to the choice of English as the chief means of international communicationare followed, and an attempt is made at clarifying the causes for the fundamental change in theworld system of languages, with the English language acquiring the status of the global language.
