The biblical symbolism of bread in figurative means of Russian and Italian languages
In this paper we will describe the metaphorization of the image of bread in Russian and Italian languages which results from a shared spiritual and religious Christian tradition. We will analyse the commonality of interpretative metaphorical models of the source image within a broader cultural context that pertains the pre-Christian era (e.g. archaic mythology and antiquity). The theoretical framework of our research is constituted by cognitive and lin-guo-cultural approaches in the study of figurative means of language and discourse. Figurative means express allegorical senses which are based on metaphorical and symbolical re-elaboration of cultural phenomena. In order to explore Christian symbolism in the metaphorical designation of "bread" (Rus. khleb / It. pane) we will conduct an analysis on the symbolic depiction of this food product in biblical texts. We will investigate the semantics and textual functioning of figurative linguistic units which shift biblical symbols in Russian and Italian lexicon and phraseology. Here some examples: nakhlebnik (in Russian; literally, "on [someone else's] bread") and mangiapane (in Italian; literally: "eats [someone else's] bread") indicate "a person who lives at someone else's expenses"; darom est' khleb (Russian) and man-giare il pane a tradimento (Italian) designate the condition of "living at the expenses of someone"; the fixed figurative expressions na khlebom edinym zhiv chelovek (Russian) and non si vive di solo pane (Italian) derive directly from the Bible ("Not on bread only shall man live"). We will demonstrate that the image of bread serves as a source conceptual dominion by means of which phenomena pertaining other conceptual target sphere are conceived. The metaphorical models related to the image of bread are the followings: "Prosperity is Bread", "Work is Bread", "Spiritual needs are Bread" etc. We will present the discursive functioning of the image of bread by providing a set of usage cases, employing figurative words and expressions in literary and publicistic texts. Ultimately, we will claim that there is a whole system of symbols and values related to the representation of bread that is shared by Russian and Italian cultures; this system is realized verbally in a set of figurative lexico-phraseological units in both languages (in their current state). The productivity of the metaphorization of the image of bread can be explained by two basic factors: 1) Russian and Italian cultures are both originally agricultural-based; 2) Russian and Italian cultures have developed under the influence of Christian tradition.
