Features and functions of inverted word order in Brazilian portuguese
The paper focuses on the syntactical aspect of word order in the Brazilian variant of the Portuguese language and the importance of teaching this aspect in the light of recent changes in higher education, specifically those caused by the implementation of the Bologna Process. The objective of the article is to identify major features of the standard and the inverted word order in Brazilian Portuguese. The article presents an analysis of specialist literature on Brazilian Portuguese grammar, explores multiple ways of employing inverted word order (used with non-accusative verbs, verbs of being, the gerund, and fixed constructions), and identifies common mistakes related to ordering the elements of declarative and interrogative sentence types. Specific examples are used to conduct a comparative analysis of grammatical constructions in the Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and English languages as well as an analysis of the semantics of discourse components in accordance with specific goals and situations. The article has identified main constituents of correct speech from the viewpoint of word order, such as the knowledge of functions of different sentence components, the knowledge of interaction features of different utterance components and the knowledge of direct and situational meaning of a phrase or a construction component.
