Convergence of parceling and metaphor as means of focusing in literary and media discourses
This article is devoted to the discourse-cognitive analysis of the mechanism of convergence of the most eloquent means of focusing of the lexical-semantic and syntactic fields: metaphor and parceling. Parceling is understood as a means of de-automatization and stimulation of attention to the separated segment and defined as an intentional and effective means of redistribution of attention in the utterance. The research presented in the article is based on the material of the corpus of literary and media texts annotated by using a special computer program Linguistica. Analysis of the corpus showed that one of the most frequent partners of parceling in convergence such as repetition, comparison, gradation and antithesis, is also a metaphor. The authors calls the ability of parceling to such an interaction its convergent potential, meaning by convergence the intention of different split-level language tools for convergence and interaction in discourse. A metaphor is understood as the basic mental operation that unites two mental spaces and creates the possibility to use the potentialities of structuring the source space in the conceptualization of a new expansion. Then the mechanism of interaction between metaphor and parceling and their role in text formation is examined. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the focuses of referent images in the text transform its structure; there is a constant refocusing of the elements. The parceling performs an active role with a metaphor in the mutual supporting partnership. Parceling, which regulates the distribution of attention in the sentence, "provides" an attentive focus on the essential, priority for the producer elements that have intentional-conditioned cognitive-discursive significance. In the author's opinion, the convergence of parceling and metaphor illustrates the possibility of interaction of different cognitive mechanisms and linguistic means and their role in the realization of author's intentions in the discourse format.
