The variability of assimilative processes in texts with different stylistic coloring
The article describes the results of a complex study of phonetic-phonological signs of butt consonants: qualitative and quantitative signs of consonants in the same position-distribution conditions in oral texts of official and unofficial communication, articulatory-perceptual characteristics of consonants and their acoustic correlates are determined depending on the stylistic affiliation of the text. Assimilative phenomena that result in modifications of consonants are considered in the article from the point of view of the stylistic coloring of the oral text, that is, consideration of the purpose of communication, the speech situation, the nature of the relationship between the speakers. The presented research is devoted to revealing the variability of assimilation processes, consonantal elision and related modifications of consonants in read texts of official and unofficial communication. The relevance of the work on the study of the variability of butt consonants is explained by the need to study phonological and phonetic phenomena at the junctions of words and within the word to understand the process of implementing the phonological system in speech. This is important in the theoretical and practical terms of teaching phonetics of the English language, in solving problems of linguistic and applied nature. Assimilative phenomena are analyzed in domestic and foreign linguistics mainly on examples of texts of the same style. When stylistic phonetic variation is mentioned, references are made to separate consonants, there is no clear classification of assimilative modifications. The description of the processes of assimilation and consonant elision is usually established on the basis of auditory analysis. This study assumes a certain ordering of assimilative phenomena in texts of official and unofficial communication, and also differs significantly from earlier experiments in this field on the material of the study and the methodology of its conduct, which includes position-distribution, statistical, auditory, acoustic (oscillographic and spectrographic) phonological methods of research. The material of this study was the dialogical texts of official and unofficial communication from the plays of contemporary English authors in the realization of native speakers. The object of the study are consonants in consonant complexes, consonants in the intervocal position, positions between vowels and sonant; Consonants in the position before or after a pause. The aim pursued by the authors of this article is thus to establish the variability of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of English consonants arising as a result of assimilative phenomena, depending on the stylistic coloring of the text.
