The cognitive function of expressing determination / indetermination of utterances in a scientific text

The article deals with the issue of expressing the determination/indetermination category in a scientific text. The aim of the paper is to prove the topicality of the problem in terms of its scientific and educational value. Studying the scientific text as a form of presenting scientific knowledge is connected with both the process and result of a scientist's cognitive work which explains the dubious nature of scientific knowledge and scientific text. On the one hand, the text is static: it gives concrete / specific definitions to the phenomena in question, which endows it with determination. On the other hand, the text is dynamic: it is constantly moving searching for something new, unexplored, and undetermined. When a scientific text is created there is an implicit dialogue between knowledge and non-knowledge that demonstrates the author's cognitive thinking and the ambivalent character of his learning language identity. The materials the article illustrates are theses and abstracts of theses on philology written in Russian as well as a monograph's text written in French and a scientific text translated from Russian into French. The research is based on the methods of functional stylistics and synergetics within the anthropocentric and cognitive framework. The article describes the linguo-cognitive background for researching the text category of determination / indetermination, shows the nature of its expression, reveals its significance for creating the functional-semantic cohesion of a text, and demonstrates the dynamics of this category in a scientific text. The analysis revealed that the efficient perception of the content of a scientific work depends on the cognitive function of language units with their inherent features of determination / indetermination.
