Immigrant vs emigrant - a review of British newspapers from the positions of critical discourse analysis
The article deals with the main categories, conceptual and theoretical positions of critical discourse analysis. Within the framework of this direction, discourse is considered as a form of social interaction where the power as domination paradigm forms negative images of "others" as representatives of other races, ethnic groups and cultures. Hence the study of the discourse of immigration as the object of critical research is based on the conceptual and methodological basis of critical discourse analysis. The author examines the discursive manifestation of xenophobia towards immigrants in the media and political discourse on the basis of two well-known British newspapers the Daily Mail and the Daily Express. As a result of the analysis, the words "immigrant", "migrant" and "emigrant" were identified to refer to people who left their countries and entered the UK. The use of these words taken together characterizes immigration in Europe as a massive, long and dramatic process, where the image of an immigrant is presented as a threat and danger to modern society. A holistic understanding of the nature, causes and consequences of immigration require a systematic analysis of all discursive strategies in a broad social context. Basic assumptions underlying critical discourse analysis, namely understanding the discourse as a communicative resource legitimizes unequal power distribution among social groups, the recognition of the variability of social norms and regulations, the consideration of elite discourse and media discourse as the main sources of power asymmetry, determine its significance as a methodology for investigating discursive manifestation of xenophobia in relation to immigrants. The study provides an opportunity to clarify how much the discourse of immigration has a socially structured order and is subject to clear rules and norms associated with certain social institutions that use the media discourse as a direct tool to influence grassroots.
