Measuring the lexical component of the language faculty: selection, definition and combination of lexical items
The article considers a piece of research on a topical issue related to the development of a system for testing the language faculty of a person. The study relies on psycholin-guistics methodology, which allows us to interpret the structure of language faculty through the structure of speech activity and language system, thus determining the components of language faculty according to the levels of language and speech. The lexical component of language faculty is interpreted not only as a dynamic system of vocabulary units that a person owns, but also as a person's ability to operate with these units in various contexts of communication, based largely on knowledge of the semantics of the word and its combinatorial properties. The article presents the results of the development of tests aimed at identifying the paradigmatic and syntagmatic aspects of the lexical component of language faculty, as well as the results of testing subjects of different age groups on the basis of related tests. The main test is the author's adaptation of The Mill Hill Vocabulary Scale for the Russian language. The test is designed to reveal the reproductive aspect as a basic component of language faculty. The test contains two types of tasks. Firstly, subjects have to pick up a synonym from the six given words that matches the stimulus. Secondly, they have to give definitions for the stimuli. The two tasks were supplemented with a task of constructing phrases with the stimuli, i.e. the task aimed at testing the subject's ability to combine lexical items. Effectiveness of the tests was tested in groups of respondents who are at different stages of their language faculty development. The first task was tested in groups of schoolchildren from classes 3-11 and students. The second and third tasks were tested in two groups of schoolchildren in the third and fifth classes. The data obtained were processed in Microsoft Office Excel. They revealed a non-linear increase in the percentage of correct answers in the groups of senior schoolchildren when performing three types of tasks and also demonstrated a decrease in productive activity of the respondents in the groups studied.
