Terms-archaisms in the domestic literature on the methods of foreign language teaching of the soviet period
Studying the processes of archaization of terminology of science allows us to get a deeper understanding of the specifics of its development, and the methods of foreign language teaching as a science is not an exception. The given article presents the results of the analysis of the domestic educational literature on the methods of foreign language teaching of the Soviet period (from the 20-ies of the XX century to 1991) for the presence of the terms-archaisms contained in it. The reference to the manuals is justified by the fact that the corresponding methodical literature was not published in the mentioned period of time (R.K. Minyar-Beloruchev's first Russian methodical dictionary was published in 1996). In total, about 30 domestic manuals on the methods of language teaching foreign were analyzed (their authors: V.M. Aleksander, L.S. Andreevskaya-Levenstern, V.D. Arakin, I.L. Bim, I.N. Vereshchagina, N.I. Gez, I.A. Gruzinskaya, R.L. Zlatogorskaya, B.F. Korndorf, M.V. Lyakhovitsky, R.K. Minyar-Beloruchev, A.A. Mirolubov, O.E. Mikhailova, E.I. Passov, F.M. Rabinovich, I.V. Rakhmanov, G.V. Rogova, T.E. Sakharova S.F. Shatilov, L.V. Shcherba, L.M. Strodt. The presence and density of terms-archaisms in manuals in certain temporary periods of publication (20s-40s; 50s-60s; 70s of the 20th century - 1991) and their specifics were subject to analysis. It was found that, in general, in the textbooks of the 20-ies - early 40-ies of the XX century the number of methodical terms is extremely small (due to the beginning of the emergence of the term system of methodical science, the lack of equivalents of some English-language didactics terms), at the same time they are unique in the specifics of the archaism terms. The textbooks of the mid 40-ies - 60-ies of the XX century contain the greatest number of terms-archaisms. Manuals published in the period from the 70s of the 20th century until 1991, mainly contain contemporary methodical terminology. Methodical terms-archaisms are identified, classified from the point of view of thematic-substantive components of methodical knowledge (thematic sections of contemporary dictionaries on the methods of foreign language teaching), the method of formation and the features of the internal structure (lexical, lexical-morphological, lexical-derivational, lexical-semantic and connotative terms-archaisms), corresponding examples are given. The results of the research can be applied in the methodical training of foreign language teachers with the aim of developing their terminological culture, teaching methodical terminology, history of methods and stages of development of the methods of foreign language teaching.
