The Romance Novel Narrative Structure

The article describes the formation and development of the structural-semiotic approach to the description of the narrative text. Particular attention is paid to the structural-typological scheme of V. Propp, in which his plot invariant of a fairy tale is presented, consisting of the main set of invariant functions and the characters implementing them in the narration. As the analysis showed, in the future, the model of V. Propp was expanded in terms of structure and was used to study other narrative texts, namely, medieval novels, detective stories. Thus, it was the basis of the theory of the structural analysis of a narrative text further developed by foreign and Russian philologists. The authors of the article consider various scientific interpretations of the notion "mass literature", the main attention is paid to the analysis of the papers devoted to the structural organization of the discourse of the romance as a type of mass literature, to the consideration of its genesis and typology; a review of studies on the linguistic features of this discourse is conducted. The romance genre is a type of discourse with a long history of development, the sources of which can be traced in the texts of S. Richardson, A. Radcliffe, S. Bronte and D. Du Maurier. The research methodology is based on the structural-semiotic method as the most effective for defining and common elements of the studied material in connection with the analysis technique of literary formulas proposed by the American culturologist J. Kavelti. It is concluded that the basis for the construction of this type of discourse is a formula, which is an archetypal model that is updated in the plot scheme, motives, character types and a certain emotional atmosphere. Based on the study of typical texts of English authors, the structural, semiotic and linguistic features of the romance discourse are highlighted and explored. The main feature of this type of discourse is the standardization and cliche in the use of language means and methods of their use, which form a special code, a sign of certain emotional and intellectual information.
