Individual Professional Thesaurus as the Basis for the Formation of Professional Foreign Language Metalinguistic Competence

The article deals with the formation of professional foreign language metalinguistic competence based on thesaurus modelling in training of students majoring in automotive industry. The relevance of the stated topic is due to the need to form not only professional skills that specialists possess to solve professional problems, but also a set of non-professional skills ("soft skills" or "flexible skills"), which are equally important. Among the latter, there are such metaprofessional skills that closely relate to the ability of successful communication both in interpersonal and intercultural communication with representatives of different cultures. Professional terminology skills significantly improve professional foreign language communication, provide an opportunity to study international experience in different areas of industry. Ten years of teaching experience prove that not all the students majoring in non-linguistic areas are ready to apply English professional terms in their own speech. Moreover, there is confusion in the appropriate choice of professional term in context. The lack of the systemic representation of term units leads to the imperfection of the metalinguistic skills. The article assumes that foreign language training will meet the requirements of the time, if it is based on the method of formation of professional metalinguistic competence with the use of thesaurus modelling. The proposed method is based on the theory of the terminological sign, traditions of educational lexicography in teaching special vocabulary and thesaurus modelling, the theory of the foreign language world picture formation of the second linguistic identity in the professional area, the formation of the individual professional thesaurus. The authors outline all the four thesaurus formation stages through the set of exercises presented in the article.
