Hypallage in the mirror of literary translation
The article considers ways of translating a hypallage being a variety of linguistic anomalies that characterizes an author's individual style and is subject to representation in a target text and culture. The hypallage is interpreted in a cognitive perspective as a mental procedure of rethinking static and dynamic properties of an object that results in a semantic and syntactic shift. The latter leads to a contradiction between semantic and syntactic relations in an utterance and has three main variants of derivation. Firstly, a property of an object is rethought as a property of its action and is verbalized abnormally by means not of an adjective, but an adverb. Secondly, a property of an action is thought to be a property of an object and is expressed non-standardly by means of an adjective rather than an adverb. Thirdly, a property of one object is thought to be an object of another one and is objectified with an adjective combined with a wrong noun. The ability to rearrange properties of an object is explained through microgenesis of perception, principles of distributing strategies of attention and ability to generate a subjective picture of the world. The contradiction of semantic and syntactic relations in the hypallage determines the cognitive dissonance in translation. On the basis of the comparative analysis of Russian literary texts and their English translations three ways of translating hypallages have been revealed and described. This classification includes reconstruction, destruction and construction and is grounded on a key criterion: how the source contradiction between semantic and syntactic relations is transferred into the target text. These translator's solutions determine the extent to which the author's artistic thinking is represented in the target culture. Reconstruction means that the hypallage is understood by the translator and is represented in a similar way. The translator overcomes the cognitive dissonance, recreates the source semantic-syntactic contradiction, conveys the integrity of the hy-pallage in the unity of its form and content and preserves its type. Reconstruction means a complete representation of the source hypallage. Destruction involves a complete reduction of the hypallage, when the translator did not comprehend it at a pre-translation stage or mastered its mechanism, but could not represent it in the target language and overcome the cognitive dissonance. Construction occurs when the translator recreates the semantic-syntactic contradiction as a characteristic of the author's verbal thought, but represents it by changing the type of the source hypallage or by creating his/her own hypallage.
