Academic intercultural communication in English: crucial issues in designing assessment tools

In modern linguodidactics, there are still only a few studies on internal university assessment and monitoring of PhD students' bilingual skills without which it is hardly possible to act successfully as a university teacher, a researcher, a science promoter, an academic expert in some fields of educaction and science , The paper offers a new approach to establishing a linguodidactic basis for developing a valid and dynamic system of internal monitoring and assessment of PhD students' academic verbal and nonverbal performance in international settings. This approach, sociocultural in its nature, has been developed within an internationally oriented competencebased paradigm of university language education, which includes carrying out: a) a linguodidactic analysis of the outcomes of Russian and foreign studies of English as a lingua franca (ELF) and International English Language (EIL), Standard English (which is used by highly educated and qualified specialists) in terms of their general and specific sociolinguistic characteristics and communication domains of functioning; b) a critical analysis of the methodological potential of the the British International English Language Testing System (IELTS) aiming at assessing non-native speakers' proficiency in Academic English who are expected to use it in academic communication (ACADEMIC EILTS); c) a linguodidactic reconceptualization of the notion of "international academic communication" with further sorting and describing key academic events (incl. scholarly & scientific events and activities) in terms of macro- and micro-academic skills involved in choosing and following a successful academic interaction strategy in the process of cooperation in the international research environment ; d) outlining the most important monolingual and bilingual sociocultural competencies used by scientists in the context of international academic communication by linguodidactic enlargement of four-level necessary and desirable competencies listed and presented in the European Framework for Research Careers that helps to assess the scholars' research activities, depending on their scientific titles and status; e) communication-oriented pragmatic and socio-cultural analysis of scholarly events, their communication scenario, communicative schemata of participants' academic performance involved in this or that event and the related verbal repertoire; f) a methodological analysis of assessment tools offered in 50 English syllabi for PhD students at Lomonosov Moscow State University; g) interviews of MSU graduate students in such areas of study as "Linguistics and Literature" and "Education and Pedagogical Sciences".
