Teacher class performance monitoring on the basis of surveying students

In the article the authors outline the rationale for surveying students with the aim of evaluating the efficiency of in-class work of the academic staff. The results of the pilot study conducted at the Southern Federal University are presented. A thorough description of the goal, objectives and methodology of the survey is given, with the results presented as diagrams. The authors stress the significance of pedagogical component in the workload of the faculty as well as the active role of students as subjects in the educational process. It is concluded that the proposed survey technique can ensure a high degree of reliability of the integrated evaluation of faculty members done by students, provided the number of students surveyed is sufficiently large. The results can lay the foundation for the assessment of pedagogical skills of a faculty member and serve to improve the quality of teaching. The reaction of the participating students was noted to be highly positive, confirming the assumption that such surveys may enhance the active role of students in the learning process. The authors argue that the survey should bear positive and motivating character, and serve the purpose of professional development of the faculty on the one hand, while contributing to a responsible and active position of students on the other. It is recommended that such surveys be conducted on a regular and compulsory basis, with a precondition that evaluation criteria are always brought to the attention of the faculty.
