Problem aspects of resocialization of convicts

Resocialization of convicts is a long process having a complex of legal, psychological, pedagogical, economic, medical, organizational measures directed at the formation of convicts' ability and readiness to return into usual conditions of life after serving their punishment. In this context, reso-cialization concretizes the main activities of correctional facilities and assumes adoption by the convicts of a complex of elementary norms, values and knowledge necessary and sufficient for inclusion into social life. It is resocialization that helps convicts to find roles in usual social conditions, form a basis for restoration of the corresponding volume of functions of normal members of society. The analysis of legal regulation history of criminal penalties enforcement in Russia and examination of current practice of penal system shows that in domestic penitentiary practice both scientists and practitioners pay sufficient attention to the problems of resocialization, which require attention of both penal correction system and of all Russian citizens. Resocialization of convicts is the impact on the personality directed at strengthening of the ability to exist in a society independently, according to the established requirements. While implementing such an influence, it is necessary to be concentrated on the development and strengthening of socially useful ties between convicts and outside world; on help in establishing positive links with other persons (convicts and representatives of administration of correctional facilities); increase and development of social status of convicts; social development of convicts (increase in social culture, development of social requirements, change of standard and valuable orientation); the organization and ensuring social protection to the categories of needy convicts (including delivery of health care); post-penitentiary maintenance of those exempted from serving their sentence. There is a number of problem aspects of resocialization of convicts and their successful solution requires improvement of the legislative base, realization of organizational, material and technical, information and other measures. The solution of questions of convicts' resocialization has important theoretical and practical value as it promotes returning to society of its lawbreakers, who are ready for a law-abiding life; decreases crime rate and reduces its recurrence and productively implements the individual scheduled maintenance.
