This article is devoted to the description of The Academic Dictionary of the Bashkir Language. The dictionary was created by the staff of the Department of Linguistics of the Order of the Badge of Honour Institute of History, Language and Literature of the Ufa Federal Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, edited by the corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor F.G. Khisamitdinova. At present, Volumes 1-9 of the ten-volume dictionary have been prepared and published. The last, tenth, volume of the dictionary is in print. The article presents an overview of the major dictionaries of the Bashkir language. The author of the article substantiates the relevance of a multi-volume lexicographical work. A sample of the dictionary entry is described. The Academic Dictionary of the Bashkir Language contains more than 70,000 words, it includes common words, the most common dialect words, obsolete words, compound words and phrases, neologisms, special purpose words, idioms, names of tribes, clans, tribal units and their attributes, mythological and ethnographic terms. The author notes that when compiling the corpus of the dictionary linguists relied on the materials of the files of explanatory and dialectological dictionaries available at the Institute of History, Language and Literature; on the materials of the most popular published dictionaries (bilingual, thematic, terminological, phraseological, etymological, spelling ones), different in structure and functional purpose, providing a comprehensive approach to the word as a unit of language and speech; on the materials of the Machine Corpus of the Bashkir Language, including the general card index, lexicographical, experimental-phonetic, grammatical, dialectological bases, catalogs of manuscripts and old-printed books (http://mfbl.ru). The features of the translation of headwords into Russian, English and Turkish are considered. It is noted that the translations of the terms required a good knowledge of several languages, background knowledge and sufficient erudition from the author-compiler. Special attention is paid to the interpretation of mythological and ethnographic terms that help reveal the spiritual culture of the Bashkir people. The author notes that this multi-volume work will be useful for specialists-linguists, and will also serve as a good guide to those interested in the history and culture of the Bashkir people.
