Motivological Comparative Dictionary of Russian and English asa source of linguo-cultural information
The article points to examinationof informative possibilities of a motivological comparative dictionary of Russian andEnglish as a new type of dictionary. The purpose of the motivological comparativedictionary is to present motivated, semi-motivated and non-motivated vocabulary insystematic view, to give broad information about motivated lexical units.The printed Motivological Comparative Dictionary of Russian and English:Phytonyms contains 400 entries. The structure of an entry consists of a Latin name of aplant with its translation, a plant name and its lexical meaning, the results of psychologicallinguisticexperiment, a sign of motivated/ non-motivated lexical unit, motivated andnominated signs, phytonymic and etymological references.This dictionary is a source for research of lexicological and lexicographic problems. Italso allows examining lexical units of the compared languages from linguo-cultural pointof view. This information contains in the inside form of a word and in a set of motivatedsigns of plant names. Comparison of motivated phytonyms allows defining the peculiaritiesof the national character and national culture of a particular ethnos manifested in motivatedsigns and in the inside form of these names.The motivological level of language research is a favourable ground for analysis ofnational specifics of language as the nature of a motivated word itself is mainly connectedwith language conscience of speakers.Names of plants are directly connected with the objective and cognitive speakers'activity and also with social and cultural originality of language community life and itsethnographic peculiarities.According to the stated peculiarities of plant names, the linguo-cultural aspect ofmotivological comparative analysis is conducted in the following directions:1. By means of the exposed set of motivates signs for thematic groups of thecompared languages the peculiarities of perception of surroundings by native speakers inthe process of objective and cognitive activity have been revealed.2. The plant names with national and cultural specificity have been singled out in theresearched material, which allows tracing the peculiarities of the national character andnational culture of a particular ethnos manifested in motivated signs. In the issue of thisanalysis it is possible to find out the spheres of national culture, which are widely presentedin the names of biological objects of Russian and English and, therefore, they are mostimportant for every language community.In the total of the linguo-cultural aspect of motivological comparative analysis thedistinctive features of phytonymic vocabulary of the compared languages connected withthe specificity of the national culture and psychology have been marked.
