Derivational base clipping as a regular morphonological phenomenon in Bashkir word formation
Clipping of the basis of the Bashkir language is treated as a regular morphonological phenomenon. This article considers its features in the system of the Bashkir language, clipping types by the position in the morphemic structure of the word and its phonemic composition. Clipping is regular when coining words by affixation, composition, reduplication, and abbreviation. Clipping can be back and middle. In the process of word formation clipping traditionally concerns deleting single phonemes or phoneme complexes. In affixation single phonemes are generally clipped in derivational bases of nouns, adjectives, numerals, verbs, adverbs. In compound bases any part can be clipped. In composition marginal forms are clipped when the first base ends in a vowel and the second begins with a vowel. In phrases and sentences vowels and consonants are clipped between the words. In some compound words phonemes and phonemic complexes are clipped even when hiatus is not formed. The variety of types of derivational base clipping in composition is connected with a large number of unique compound words related to the field of terminology (botany, zoology, geography, etc.) in the Bashkir language. When forming verb compounds, if the first base ends in a vowel and the second begins with a vowel, colloquial speech traditionally clips one of the vowels. Reduplication also uses clipping: the derivational bases loses its initial phoneme and becomes the first component of the compound as an echo of the main component. Affixation uses clipping in the final position of the base. Composition uses clipping mainly in colloquial and dialectal words. In noun clusters "noun in the indefinite possessive case + noun with an affix of belonging" the second word loses its affix. In noun clusters "adjective + noun = noun" the final part of the first word is clipped. Abbreviation also uses a different type of clipping.
