Nominations of non-voice sounds of a person and their functioning in the texts of a folk speech culture representative
The article deals with the analysis of the nominations of non-voice sounds of a person. The study is done on the material of individual speech of a Siberian old-timer. 99 units (a lexical-semantic variant was taken as a unit of calculation) in more than 500 usages were analyzed. For the nomination of a sound, the dialect speaker most often uses verbs and onomatopoeia, and rarely nouns and adjectives. Several comparisons and metaphors were also fixed. as well as some non-verbal units (gestures). The non-voiced sounds of a person were divided into three groups: signals; sounds accompanying various actions; physiological sounds. The microfield "Signals" includes 22 units. Most of them are nominations of a knock at the door and their various derivatives. Nominations of this type of sound can be combined with nominations of thinking, emotion and evaluation, and such examples indicate their importance. The second group of nominations (sounds accompanying various actions) totals to 27 units. Sounds produced when food and drink are consumed are mentioned fairly often, and this fact reflects the importance of the process of eating in the peasant worldview. Sounds accompanying physical work as well as sounds of strokes are also regularly verbalized. The functioning of the onomatopoeic unit imitating spittle is peculiar. This unit, along with the gesture, is polysemantic. Most often it is used to denote a symbolic defense against the evil eye, and such usage reflects the superstitious views of the traditional culture representative. The second meaning is the expression of contempt and the third meaning (or function) is using it as a reaction to one's own mistake. The last microfield "Physiological Sounds" includes 50 units. The dialect speaker actively uses onomatopoeia (some of which are not presented in the literary language) to name such sounds. Physiological sounds (coughing, sneezing, snoring, wheezing, etc.) are usually associated with illness. A special group of nominations is that of unreal sound (tinnitus). It is nominated by different ways, including detailed comparisons with a natural phenomenon (wind). The final part of the article is devoted to the analysis of metaphorical meanings of sound nominations in the idiolect (eight cases). As a result of the whole analysis, the following conclusions are drawn in the article: 1. The non-voice sound in the worldview of the informant appears most often as a sign informing about different events and states. 2. Sound is included in the system of superstitious representations of the person. 3. The sphere of music which takes an important place in literary texts is not relevant for the informant (it is a lacuna in the dialect sound worldview).
