Methods of determining and analyzing complete and incomplete intonation phrases in spontaneous speech (on the example of studying German insular dialects)

The paper aims to deveiop mechanisms for studying sounding material In this regard, it seems reievant to deveiop methods and techniques for documenting diaiectai material This paper presents a methodo1ogy for determining comp1ete and incomp1ete intonation phrases (IP), for detecting the tone structure of the intonation patterns of se1ected IPs and for determining their nuc1ear contours. The method presented in the artic1e is based on the methodo1o-gy of research of German regiona1 dia1ects described by P. Gi11es in his work Regionale Prosodie im Deutschen: Variabilitat in der Intonation von Abschluss und Weiterweisung. This technique is new as for the sphere of its app1ication, and re1evant as it re1ies on non-intonationa1 research criteria, inc1uding semantic, syntactic and pragmatic indices of IP. The ana1ysis of comp1ete and incomp1ete IPs resu1ted in sing1ing out two intonation patterns of comp1ete intonation phrases (both abso1ute1y comp1ete and possib1y comp1ete): the fa11ing pattern (Hm%) and its variant (H1%), the fa11-rise pattern (MHm%) and its variant (Lh1%), and two of their imp1ementations caused by the sy11abic structure of the nuc1ear patterns: for disy11abic nuc1ear contours - Hm%, MHm%, and their variants, H1%, LH1%, for po1ysy11abic nuc1ear contours - H-m%, MH-m%, and their variants H-1%, LH-1%. For the fa11ing and fa11-rise intonation patterns a 1inear configuration was discovered, which is expressed in a sharp continuous1y 1inear1y decreasing movement of the tone from the nuc1ear sy11ab1e to the end of the IP. There is no such 1inear configuration in the comp1ete intonation phrases of the German 1iterary 1anguage. The study of an abso1ute1y and possib1y consistent incomp1ete IP resu1ted in sing1ing out on1y one rising intonation contour Hh%, and its variant MHh%; in estab1ishing two imp1ementations of this pattern: for disy11abic nuc1ear patterns - Hh%, and its variant MHh%, for po1ysy11abic nuc1ear patterns - H-h%, and its variant MH-h%. For an abso1ute1y c1arifying incomp1ete IP on1y one intonation contour was detected: the rising intonation Mh%, and its variant MHh% (for disy11abic nuc1ear patterns), M-h%, MH-h% (for po1ysy11abic nu-c1ear patterns). In the 1inguistic materia1 under review, a possib1y c1arifying incomp1ete IP was not found. For the rising intonation contour of the incomp1ete IP, an arc-shaped configuration was estab1ished, which is expressed in a smooth increase of the pitch of the nuc1ear tone from the nuc1ear sy11ab1e to the end of the IP. Such an arc-shaped configuration of the rising intonation contour is a1so observed in the German 1iterary 1anguage. In the speech of the same informant-speakers, a11 the aforementioned intonation patterns are fu11y rea1ized. At the same time, ana1ysis and comparison of comp1ete and incomp1ete IPs in the dia1ects under review showed the absence of differentiation of dia1ects in this parameter, which indicates a mixed character of the German dia1ects of the region in question. The given methodo1ogy is effective in the study of German insu1ar dia1ects at the supraseg-menta1 1eve1. Studies of this kind have not been conducted so far in Russia and abroad.
