The case for aspectual pairs reopened
The article discusses a classic problem of Russian aspectology - the description of aspectual pairs. The concept of aspectual pairs in Russian remains one of the most controversial. There are no stringent operating criteria to distinguish aspectual pairs. The article presents new arguments demonstrating theoretical unreasonableness and little usefulness in practice of the well-known Maslov criterion. The aim of the study is to propose a new more formal criterion for aspectual pairs in the Russian language. The most controversial cases are the cases of pairs “basic imperfective verb - perfective prefixed verb”, which is investigated in the article. A fundamentally new approach based on a quantitative analysis of the dynamics of the frequencies of usage of words included in an aspectual pair is proposed. Frequencies of word usage are taken from a set of n-grams in Russian from the well-known Google Books Ngram Viewer program. 202 word pairs were analyzed; they had been taken from the Exploring Emptiness base of aspectual pairs created under the leadership of Laura Janda and from literature sources. The difficulty in identifying aspectual pairs is that the words of such a pair must have identical semantics, which has not yet been formalized. We have noticed that the frequency of the usage of words with the same lexical semantics changes in a synchronous manner over time. On this basis, the following criterion for aspectual pairs is proposed. Verbs from the pair “basic imperfective verb - perfective prefixed verb” form an aspectual pair if and only if the frequency of their usage changes synchronously, i.e. frequency graphs have the same shape. Graphs are interpreted as time series in a mathematical sense. For a numerical assessment of the proximity of the shapes of the graphs, the calculation of the Spearman correlation coefficients of the corresponding series was applied. Both theoretical and statistical arguments are presented in favor of this assumption. The proposed criterion was applied to the analysis of a number of specific cases demonstrating gaps in dictionary entries. In particular, the rationale is provided that the aspectual partner of the imperfective verb “to be interested” is the perfective verb “to become interested”, and not ‘to take an interest’, as it has been described so far. The proposed criterion allows identifying problem cases in the definition of aspectual pairs and provides material for an in-depth linguistic analysis of controversial cases.
