Book review: Nenasheva, L.V. (2019) Rukopisnaya kniga Russkogo Severa XV-XX vv. v sobranii Gosudarstvennogo muzeynogo ob"edineniya "Khudozhestvennaya kul ’tura Russkogo Severa". Nauchnyy katalog [Handwritten book of the 15th-20th century Russian North in the collection of the Artistic Culture
The article is a review of the scientific catalogue of the 15th- to 20th-century Russian Northern manuscripts from the Arkhangelsk Museum Association. That collection features memorials of traditional church literature, Old Believers’ manuscripts and ledgers. The books are listed in chronological order with descriptions of filigree as well as paleographic descriptions. The authoress frequently titles the manuscripts herself basing her choices on their content. The catalogue is richly illustrated, it features high-quality reproductions of all the miniatures from the manuscripts. The authoress points out that the book design is very typical of the Russian North. There is some curious information on the records made by scribes. The content of every book is given in detail, “unconventional” books are compared with conventional ones. Most manuscripts deal with the 17th-century Church reform, they describe the relations between the official Church and the Old Believers. All the manuscripts mentioned in the catalogue were written in the Russian North, which is clear from the presence of Northern dialectal words and from the analysis of the paper used. The author declares no conflicts of interests.
