The term as a means of lexical cohesion in sports encyclopedic discourse
The aim of the article is to represent the role of the term as a discourse formation means of lexical cohesion in sports encyclopedic texts, imparting stylistic characteristics to them. The presented research is based on a corpus of three original texts from English-language encyclopedias with a total volume of 784,596 word uses. The relevance of the study is due to the insufficient attention of linguists to encyclopedic texts as a component of sports discourse. The description of the encyclopedic segment of texts on this topic contributes to a more complete research of the features of communication in the field of sports. The encyclopedic text is addressed to a wide range of people who have background knowledge about the subject but are often not representatives of the professional community. The terminology of the text belonging to the special discourse is determined by its content; the correct perception of terms requires interest and presupposition. During the study, a continuous sampling method, morphological form analysis, word-formation analysis, phrase-formation analysis, semantic analysis, descriptive method for interpreting the research material, and statistical processing method are used. The "word cloud" technique allows identifying key lexemes, the AntConc program helps to establish frequency and compatibility with other units in the discourse. The authors emphasize the role of terms as key semantic units, markers of sports encyclopedic discourse significant from the point of view of discourse formation, the purpose and subject of communication, information content and accessibility. The terminological content of the text is determined by the necessity to perform a meaning-forming function, expressing a wide range of special concepts - actions, qualities, artifacts, people, phenomena, etc. The term is presented as a significant means of lexical cohesion both at the local level and at the level of the entire text. Terminological units participate in such types of cohesion as repetition of the same term; word families; synonyms (including contextual ones); periphrastic repetition; pronominalization; words of the same lexical-semantic group; terminological collocations. Terms are analyzed from the point of view of word formation, phrase formation, semantics, lexical relations, functions performed in the text. The potential of a term to act as a means of cohesion is determined by its linguistic nature, namely, by such properties as content precision, system character, and derivational ability. The functioning of terms contributes to the informativity, consistency, precision, and clarity of texts - integral characteristics of the popular scientific substyle.
