The correlation problem of style and discourse concepts in linguistics in the beginning of the 21st century in the context of M. N. Kozhina's ideas
The correlation problem of the style and discourse concepts in the domestic linguistics is topical more than ever and is far away from its unambiguous decision. The founder of the domestic stylistic school M. N. Kozhina in her latest works considers the question of discursive analysis and functional stylistics. Postulating "the connection of discourse features with a functional style" - "terms-concepts of discourse and functional style went hand in hand in the history of linguistics, which, obviously, is not casual", - she states, "These terms-concepts cannot be identified". Let us generalize and develop the important provisions developed by the researcher: • discourse and style concepts are adjacent, parallel, non-identical, heterogeneous, multi-ordinal notions of two "close disciplines of linguistics"; • discourse in its ontological determination goes back to formation, functional style - to forms of public consciousness, so discourse acquires such qualities of a social formation as a focused dependency on a certain public practice, direct social and historical conditionality, "revolutionism", mobility, dynamism, variability, procedurality, tendency to multiple variability of speech expression; while style has such properties of forms of public consciousness as typification of an uncertain set of separate public practices in an objectively limited quantity of forms of public consciousness, indirect social-historical conditionality, "evolutionary character", stability, tendency to invariance of speech expression; • the theory of functional styles offers a consistent and rather harmonious general systematization of the object (styles, sub-styles), the discourse theory - a plurality of separate classifications by various bases. As a result of M.N. Kozhina's deep lingua-philosophical reflections comes an unconditional recognition of, first, the theoretical-methodological proximity of the analysis of discourse and functional stylistics; second, an obvious tendency to their further rapprochement; third, the remaining questionability of their correlation. V.Ye. Chernyavskaya in her recent work "Discourse as a phantom object: from text to discourse and back?" makes a considerable world outlook breakthrough in the evolutionary development of M.N. Kozhina's ideas. Postulating an indisputable commonality of the methodological principle "underlying the functional-stylistic and discursive focused approaches" - "focus on interdependence of the linguistic and the extra linguistic", V.Ye. Chernyavskaya believes that "the category of discourse offers to the researcher a special principle of division of communicative spheres and speech systems correlating with them, different from the now operating in functional stylistics". So, developing M.N. Kozhina's ideas about the correlation of style and discourse concepts, it is possible to say that the demarcation line between style and discourse is on the axis of communicative space division: deductively, from top to bottom in the first case, inductively, from bottom to top in the second; according to fundamental ontology of language / speech in the first case, according to variability and polyvalency of empirical development of language / speech in the second.
