Analysis of harmonic generation in planar undulators in single-pass free electron lasers

We perform a theoretical study of the evolution of the radiation power of harmonics in a single-pass free-electron laser (FEL). We make a comparison with some FEL experiments. For the analysis we use phenomenological description that deals with the basic parameters of the FEL: the beam current, the Lorentz factor of the electrons, the energy spread, the sizes of the beam. This description can be applied to practically any undulator FEL. The effect of the high harmonics of the undulator field on the FEL radiation is explored with account for the characteristics of the beam. The Bessel coefficients are rigorously calculated. With the help of the phenomenological model the bunching and the power of coherent FEL radiation in SPARC FEL, SACLA FEL at SPRING 8 and LCLS FEL are studied. We model the harmonic evolution for these experiments and compare it with the measurements, including the even and high harmonics, gain length, saturation length and power etc. Possible effect of the 3rd undulator field harmonic on the FEL radiation is modeled. It is shown that even if the 3rd field harmonic has 30% amplitude of the main periodic magnetic field, its effect of the FEL radiation is rather weak. The modeled second harmonic presence in the FEL experiments appears in line with the measurements.
