Erosion of vacuum arc cathodes in the microsecond range of pulse duration
The results of measuring the specific erosion of vacuum arc cathodes at pulse durations from 1 to 550 μs are presented. It is shown that the erosion of materials with a melting point of more than 500 °C does not depend on the pulse duration and is in the range of (30 - 100) μg/C, and the erosion of cathodes with a melting point of less than 500 °C corresponds to this range only at a pulse duration of less than 10 μs. At arc pulse durations of 250 - 550 μs, the erosion for these materials reaches abnormally high values of 500 - 1000 μg/C. It is shown that this is due to an increase in the droplet fraction during melting of the cathode surface to a depth of tens of micrometers during an arc pulse.
