Personal virtues as predictors of life satisfaction

There are no researches devoted to the studying of interrelation between life satisfaction, estimates of the quality of human’s life and recognition of the expressiveness of individual values in the native psychological literature. Some results of the solution of this essential task are reflected in the present article. The empirical research of the self-assessment of expressiveness of personal values at 658 residents of 4 Siberian cities (Tomsk, Kemerovo, Barnaul, Lesosibirsk) was carried out in 2013-2014 with the use of the following techniques: 1. The "Questionnaire of 24 virtues" developed by E.N. Osin on the basis of a questionnaire "The profile of personal values" of K. Peterson and M. Seligman's Values-In-Action. 2. "A questionnaire of quality of life and satisfaction" (brief option of M. Ritsner, etc. in E.I. Rasskazova's adaptation). 3. A scale of satisfaction by E. Diner's life (in D. A. Leontyev and E.N. Osina’s adaptation,). The analysis of the obtained results showed that during the assessment of the "real I" participants of the research see themselves as the people possessing first of all such values as "kindness" and "love" (with the identical average value of 4.17 points). According to the respondents’ opinions such values as "religiousness" and "leadership" are expressed marginally (average values of 2.57 and 3.22 points respectively). In the course of the study it was also established that subjective estimate of expressiveness of values in "real I" is connected with life satisfaction and an assessment of quality of life only in a small degree: the assessment of life satisfaction received by means of Diner's scale correlates only with estimates of expressiveness of values "vital energy" and "persistence" (r=0.3414; p = 0.0001 and r=0.2893; p=0.004 respectively). The correlation analysis of data by E. Rasskazova's questionnaire showed that satisfaction of the person with quality of life in "thematically" allocated areas - in the sphere of physical health, the emotional sphere, activity in free time and the social sphere - isn't connected with respondents’ estimate of their expressiveness of these or those values. But, at the same time, some not numerous interrelations, characterizing separate aspects of the relation of a person to life were found. So, it is possible to claim that recognition of value "vital energy" causes greater person’s satisfaction with different aspects of life, higher valuation of its quality. Besides, it was found out that the "gap" in estimates of the importance of values and their expressiveness in "real I" (values "real I" and "ideal I" are closer) is less - the person’s assessment of quality of life is higher.
