Psychological health of schoolchildren and socioeconomic status of a family

A research of psychological health of children was conducted. With the help of teachers' questionnaires the intensity of divergences in behavior, emotional disorders, hyperactivity, peer problems and social behavior of 623 schoolchildren studding in the 1-9 forms were studied. A new instrument for measuring psychological health of children and adolescents, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), was translated into Russian and used for teacher ratings of 623 schoolchildren aged 7-17. The SDQ comprises 25 items, divided into 5 subscales: emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity, peer problems and prosocial behaviour. Our results, which are novel findings on the instrument, showed gender and cross-cultural differences. Effects of SES factors: family size, number of children in the family, parents' age, education and occupation and family income are presented. The Russian SDQ appears to be promising and warrants further evaluation.
