Motivation: new theoretical approaches, diagnostics and practical recommendations
The paper presents the keynote lecture given at the Interregional Conference "Psychology of motivation in modern social contexts" organized jointly by Tomsk State University and International laboratory of positive psychology of personality and motivation of National Research University Higher School of Economics (Tomsk, July 2016). The paper introduces a series of studies dedicated to intrinsic and extrinsic motivation based on self-determination theory (SDT), a contemporary theory of human motivation and well-being. The paper describes main measures of intrinsic and extrinsic academic and work motivation recently developed by the author and her colleagues. We present two types of studies of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation - based on learning activity and work activity. The findings obtained in both domains confirm the main hypothesis that not only the quality of motivation (profile of motivation) matters, but also the quantity of intrinsic motivation does matter. Only students with high intrinsic motivation measured by motives to know, to achieve and to change accompanied by relatively low extrinsic motives and amotivation demonstrate the highest level of GPA, other academic achievements, including winning in international competitions and lowest inclination to cheat in order to get good grades. Again, only employees with high intrinsic and identified motivation (autonomous motivation) and relatively low level of controlled extrinsic motivation and amotivation demonstrated the highest work and life satisfaction in general, and they were involved in work-related activities. The advantages of individual motivational profiles analysis instead the analysis of separate motivation types are discussed. The challenges with which self-determination theory researchers encounter today and possible solutions are also described. Finally, we present some practical recommendations to increase intrinsic motivation at schools, universities and at work.
