The influence of mindset on selective perception of an untrue text

Selectivity of perception is considered as an attribute of a person's attitude to lies. Selectivity is studied through perception strategies in the trends of compliance and non-compliance. Lying is thought of as a plausible message presented in the form of a printed text. Lies are presented as a psychological system characterized by self-organization and complication. This article describes the results of an experimental study of the role of a mindset in the specifics and variety of strategies for perceiving an untrue text. The general hypothesis of the study was the following: if the mindset influences specific features in selective perception of untrue texts, then this specificity should manifest itself in the trends of compliance and non-compliance of semantic clusters and vectors relating to certain types of mindset. The motivational mindset actualized the affective selective orientation. The participants of the research perceived the untrue message through the prism of emotional concern about those who participated in the events described in the untrue text. The cognitive mindset actualized the affective-cognitive selective orientation including affective components. Authentic mindset actualized the multivector path of formation of selectivity. In the affective group the level of emotional concern about the described events was the lowest. In the cognitive group the level of understanding of the untrue text tended to be underestimated compared to the rest of the groups. Perceptual strategies in terms of quantity did not differ. The selectivity, which was expressed through the selection of parameters, did not find its confirmation regarding the mindset. The mindset did not affect the level of effectiveness of strategies for perceiving the untrue message. Participants in the cognitive group demonstrated a non-compliance between ranking and selection of parameters more often that others, explaining the non-compliance with reassessing the importance of certain parameters with respect to their perception of the untrue message. It can also be noted that the attitude to the untrue text was expressed in accordance with a scale that reflects the levels of expression of the parameters. In accordance with the mindset of the affective type, the level of concern tended to be low in comparison with the mindset of other types. The hypothesis about the influence of the mindset on selective perception of an untrue message, or rather on the specifics of the formation of strategies, as well as the semantic dynamics of the ranking and selection parameters, was confirmed. The practical significance of the results: they can be used in the field of confronting techniques of manipulating the mass consciousness of people.
