Values and Moral Foundations as a Basis for the Socio-Political Views of Youth
The article is devoted to the relation of socio-political views of youth with characteristics of values and moral domain on the basis of the Schwartz's Theory of Basic Human Values and Haidt's Moral Foundations Theory. Previous studies showed that basic values correlated with political preferences and beliefs. However, the recently obtained data on the relation between characteristics of moral domain and conserva-tism-liberalism indicate that moral foundations may be more important predictor of socio-political views than values. This hypothesis de-serves special attention in the specific context of Russian political culture. To test the hypothesis we organized an empirical study in the sample of 138 university students at the age of 18-25 years old. To assess socio-political views, we composed a questionnaire of 16 statements that reflected the opinions on thorny socio-political issues such as poverty, inequality, censorship, patriotism, the role of religion in society, de-mocracy, attitudes toward elites and so on. Alt-hough the results of factor analysis of this ques-tionnaire revealed multidimensional structure (not less than five orthogonal factors), most of the issues presented in the questionnaire allowed both conservative and liberal opinions. Basic values were measured using Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ-R2) by Schwartz et al. To assess the characteristics of moral domain we used Moral Foundations Questionnaire by Gra-ham et al. The results showed that socio-political views correlated with both basic values and moral foundations. The most important values for socio-political views of youth were the values of Conservation and Openness to change which associated with conservative and liberal views. In the moral domain the binding moral foundations showed stronger correlations than individualizing foundations. The strongest correlations with views showed the coefficient of progressivism which reflected the balance between individualizing and binding moral foundations. Comparison of regression models demonstrated that moral foundations were more important predictor of socio-political views than values especially with respect to the conservative and patriotic views. These results are consistent with recently obtained data supporting the important role of moral foundations in political beliefs. The findings of this research give better scientific understanding of values and moral foundations as a basis for socio-political views of youth in the context of Russian political culture.
