Semantic Aspect of Cognitive Readiness to Accept Polymodal Information
This paper presents the results of an empirical study examining the relationship between dynamic semantic systems of world image and cognitive readiness in young people working with polymodal scientific information. The relevance of the study stems from the growing role of digital technologies in education, which necessitates the development of new strategies for processing information in conditions of its overload and polymodality. The study aimed to identify the characteristics of semantic components of a world image in individuals with varying levels of cognitive readiness. The study involved 143 respondents ages 18-35 (university students and graduates). Cognitive readiness was assessed using an original questionnaire measuring operational and cognitive aspects of working with scientific information. Semantic structures were analyzed using D.A. Leontiev’s Method of Ultimate Meanings, which included evaluating the length and branching of semantic chains, as well as indices of decentralization, reflexivity, and negativity. Key findings include: The level of cognitive readiness correlates with the complexity of semantic structures: respondents with high scores in the Method of Ultimate Meanings demonstrated a more critical and reflective approach to information search. Three distinct strategies for working with information were identified. Low level - superficial search, reliance on easily accessible sources; Medium level - selective verification of source credibility. High level - systematic analysis, skepticism even toward authoritative sources. Dynamic semantic systems (e.g., global meaning-making goals, reflexivity) serve as markers of cognitive readiness. The discussion integrates theories of meaning formation (D.A. Leontiev), the interplay between being and meaning (M.K. Mamardashvili), and the role of the informational approach in education (M.V. Makovetskaya). The study highlights that fostering student's worldview development can enhance their ability to process polymodal information by reducing psychological barriers and expanding semantic horizons.
