The Concept "National Language" in Belarusian Mass Media
The article discusses the results of the interpretation of the concept "national language" (namely, "BeLarusian national language") by the central and regional news media in Belarus (March - October, 2016). The formation of the conceptual content is determined by (1) the specificity of the media discourse, which functionally is a global re-translator of social modes set by different social forces and an active participant in the formation of these modes in readers' minds; (2) the specificity of the genre of news reports focused on the objective and factual presentation of information; (3) a special cultural significance of the concept "national language"; (4) historical, cultural and political specificity of the modern BeLarusian society. The concept "national language" in BeLarusian news reports is represented in two axioLogicaL figurative versions: (1) the BeLarusian language as a significant component of the national identity and (2) the BeLarusian Language as the mainstay of the BeLarusian statehood, Due to the genre features, the axioLogicaL component of the concept - in any form - is verbalised though an appeal to events connected with the problem of national identity and national sovereignty. Describing such events, the media specially transform the content of the cited quotes. The differences in interpretation of the figurative variants are as follows: (1) the level of institutionality in the presentation of the Belarusian language as a component of state sovereignty is much higher than when it is presented as a sign of national identity; (2) the specificity of the socio-political situation determines a conflict-free image of the Belarusian language as a marker of national identity. The competitive relations of the Belarusian and Russian languages are explicated in the formation of the image of the Belarusian national language when referring to the issue of national sovereignty, yet this conflict is weak: the Russian language in news reports of Belarusian media is not discussed as an opponent to Belarusian; the prospect of lower status of the Russian language by increasing that of Belarusian is not verbalised.
