The Khotin Fortress - the basis of the consolidation of power in the beginning of the rule of Stefan the Great
The taking of the Khotin Fortress was a triumph of dipLomacy for the ruLer and his supporters. The fortress was the dowry of the Kievan Princess Evdokiia, the wife of Stefan the Great. The entry of the MoLdavian garrison into Khotin and the marriage of Stefan occured in 1463. After the demise of Princess Evdokiia on July 9, 1466 Moldavian-Polish bilateral talks took place. Although the theme of the discussion is unknown to us, by the composition of the delegation it can be assumed that the talks were about the return of the dowry, that is the Fortress of Khotin. It is enough to remember that the governor of Podolia and commander of the fortress Pokutin was in the Polish delegation while in the Moldavian delegation was the brilliant diplomat of the time Vlaiku Pyrkelab. The Moldavian diplomats convinced the Polish side that with regard to the return of the dowry there can be no discussion in as much as Elena, the daughter of Princess Evdokiia, was its lawful heir.
