Foreign clerrgy in Bessarabia first half of 19th C: Metropolitan of Silistra Anthymos (1778-1836)
In this article are published some unknown data on Metropolitan of SiListra and Preslav Anthimos. He was born in 1778 in Makrinitsa located in Thessaly, Greece. Greek by origin . At various times was the Metropolitan of such dioceses as Devron (August 1809 - October 1814) and Didimotika (October 1814-March 1821) in Greece; and in the Bulgarian lands headed the Dristor (Silistra) and Preslav (March 1821-September 1836) dioceses. During the period of Russian governance in Silistra he remade the local mosque in St. Nicholas Church, and also initiated the construction of the new church of St. George. For fear of reprisals by the Ottomans after the departure of tsarist troops he fled to Bessarabia. Resided in Ismail, where for a short period of time served in the Greek Church of St. Dimitry. After his death was buried at the same church. The article also discusses the debate about the assets that remained after his death. After the trials the part of the property not marked in the will was sent to the Constantinople Patriarchate, and the other part was transferred to his cousin Diallete.
