Linguistic situation in Bukovina in Austrian period: the dynamics of regional languages in the sociolinguistic aspect (1774-1918)
The aim of this work is sociolinguistic analysis of the regional languages' functioning in Bukovina produced by evaluating linguistic situation in the cultural frontier, which the Bukovina was between the 18 and 20 centuries. It makes this study particularly relevant within the globalization policy of today. The paper is directed to sociolinguistic description of language situation as functioning of five major regional languages (Ukrainian, Romanian, Polish, German and Yiddish) in the Bukovina in Austrian period (1774-1918). The language situation was exoglossic (i.e. multilingual), rather dynamic, dependent on language policy of Austria, which could balance the circulation of regional languages, distributing their function. The German language acted as the language of law and culture. On its basis the Bukovynian Koine-Buchenlendish was evolved for interethnic communication community including features of other regional languages. Other language (thanks to the press and schooling) have raised their level of use, which helped to stabilize the situation in multilingual region. The Bukovinian experience should be applied in the construction of European house.
